The Challenge

Sacramento Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for providing policing and public safety services to the over 500,000 residents living and working in the city of Sacramento. The Sacramento Police Department has always strived to represent excellence in policing. One way they do this is by staying one step ahead by anticipating trends, being proactive in all areas, and taking action before we have to react to crises. As the primary law enforcement agency within this community, Sacramento Police Department was looking for a better way to train and prepare their officers for real-life de-escalation and use of force incidents.

The Solution

Sacramento PD tested and evaluated every VR/Non-VR training simulator available, but none of the systems provided the training experience they were looking for. After significant research on the various options, the Sacramento Police Department chose to include the Apex Officer virtual reality training simulator as a major component of its training program.

The Results

Beginning in the Fall of 2021, the Sacramento Police Department Research, Training, and Employee Development Division, implemented the Apex Officer simulator as a component of their 2021 Additional Officer Training. The Apex Officer system is being used with the intent to improve the officer's ability to generate voluntary compliance, utilize the tools of interpersonal and strategic communication, identify use of force options, reinforce de-escalation, leadership skills and critical decision making.
